US News & World Report: How Much Divorce Attorney Fees Cost
As noted, they can be high. Demetria Graves, a certified family law specialist and managing partner of The Graves Law Firm in Los Angeles, says that if both spouses hire an attorney, costs can range from $2,500 to $50,000.
Assuming some smelling salts have now revived you, keep in mind that how much you spend on a divorce attorney depends, according to Graves, on whether you have a simple dissolution taking up about five hours of an attorney's time or a much more complex one, taking up around 20 hours. It also is based on what you'll pay to divorce in Los Angeles. If you live in a town with a lower cost of living, you'll pay less.
Generally, you pay these fees, according to Graves, on a retainer. She says: "If your matter exceeds the retainer, you are charged at the hourly rate of anywhere from $200 to $2,000 an hour."

Demetria Graves attended Loyola Law School, and six months after passing the bar, opened her own family law practice in her hometown of Pasadena at the age of 25. Graves is currently a leading family law attorney, who has also become a Certified Family Law Specialist. She also serves as the Secretary of the Family Law Executive Committee with the California Lawyers Association and currently serves as the co-chair of the African American Alumni Association, Loyola Law School, assisting law school attendees to successfully complete law school. She is a mentor to several law students and young attorneys. Graves is also an adjunct professor, and has taught at Abraham Lincoln Law School and West Los Angeles Community College. Additionally, she serves as a Judge Pro Tem with the Los Angeles Superior Court. She also has a podcast called “Legalish,” that discusses celebrity-related family law issues for those facing similar challenges.

I have a small girl whom I've been completely involved with since her birth, despite her mother and I having never been married. We had a mutual agreement that the courts never needed to be involved, and everything would be 50/50. But eventually she filed for full custody, demanding I see my little girl 2 days a month. All this after 3 years without incident. Frankly, I was scared. She had retained an attorney, but I could not afford one. We ultimately came to an agreement which held briefly. I thought my child was residing out of town with her mother for 4 months, when in fact, she was only 12 minutes away. At this point I immediately asked a friend in the law field for help.
