Surviving Divorce Is Sometimes A Group Effort

Posted By Demetria Graves || 6-Aug-2012

Children aren't the only ones who need support

The life of someone who is going through either a separation or divorce is usually one of a very lonely person. Sure, that person may have friends and family who love them, but they are going through a uniquely trying time. Their partner who they believed was their true love at one point is gone, and the divorce will cause tension with their children, fairly or not. If there was any time to build an ad-hoc support system for them, it's then. It's time to start a divorce support group.

While it's important to have people there who the person trusts, it's just as significant to have others who have gone through a divorce or separation. Their words of wisdom, or answers to specific questions, could mean the difference between a successful and unsuccessful group. Use their knowledge in specific settings and they can make the soon-to-be-divorced or –separated ready to deal with the worst that the situation can throw at them.

As for settings, just because this is a group meeting doesn't mean it has to be set up like an AA meeting. It doesn't have to take place in a basement with a circle of chairs. Remember that you're trying to make them forget their worries, not compound them. So what should you do with them to make them blissful, but remain helpful? Here are a few ideas:

Start a book club While this seems like an odd way to go about making a person forget about a divorce, remember that books open up the world of imagination. Choose books that are appropriate, though – romance novels may not be the way to go when a historical novel is can enthrall the same.

Potluck dinners Dinnertime can be lonely for the recently separated. What better way to liven up their life than getting some friends over and cooking a great meal – with a bottle of wine to open the conversation!

Out-of-the-way outings Work, home; home, work. Sometimes, the newly divorce get into a rut of not going anywhere that leaves them stuck mentally. So unstick their lives and plan group outings. The beach, a park picnic or a even a day at the amusement park can make any day less routine. Even picking them up after work one day and taking them to a movie can help them get out of the rut in their mind. That leaves them free to think of ways to move on and get on with their new lives.
