TomKat Reaches A Settlement

Posted By Demetria Graves || 9-Jul-2012

Lawyers worked all weekend to hasten the inevitable

Talk about a mission impossible – less than two weeks after Katie Holmes filed divorce papers in New York to end her marriage to Tom Cruise, the actors have found a common ground and a agreed to a settlement. While there are financials with fantastic numbers, the main win has to go to the Holmes camp, which got the physical custody of the ex-couple's daughter, Suri.

The main target of what many were imagining was going to be a courtroom slugfest, the custody of the now-six-year-old Suri was what led many to speculate why Holmes had filed in New York instead of California. The Empire State's courts are not no-fault, allowing for her counsel to bring up all sorts of factors in hopes of winning full custody with a judgment in their favor. California's no-fault rulings

It is rare for such a high-profile couple to have such a speedy settlement. Further speculation revolves around the idea that one of the two was very motivated to move this along. Many fingers are pointing at Cruise and the way the proceedings were putting a spotlight on his relationship with the Church of Scientology. Either way, it seems that the couple were amicable in figuring their issues out. The two released a joint statement before the ruling.

"We are committed to working together as parents to accomplishing what is in our daughter Suri's best interests," the pair said in the statement. "We want to keep matters affecting our family private and express our respect for each other's commitment to each of our respective beliefs and support each other's roles as parents."
