Will You Check In To (Or Check Out) The Divorce Hotel?

Posted By Demetria Graves || 29-May-2012

A novel idea might not be the best one for a divorce

Entrepreneur Jim Halfens has decided to bring a very unique boutique hotel idea to the United States from his home in the Netherlands. There, he has been very successful with his creation—the Divorce Hotel—where couples check in, but they don't check out (married).

After watching one of his friends go through a long, protracted divorce, Halfens thought that there had to be a cleaner way for couples to divorce. So he thought of the Divorce Hotel, which isn't a whole building, but a few rooms of an established hotel where couples going through divorce check in on Friday, stay in separate rooms, and through a mediator, have their divorce settled by the end of Sunday. Well, that's the idea anyway.

The hotel staff is informed who is staying under the program so as not to always wish them a pleasant stay when they know how stressful their situation is. There is also a secret suite where all the negotiations are held. For all this, including the divorce, the cost will run you anywhere between $3,500 and $10,000. However…

Just as a quickie wedding through a chapel in Las Vegas isn't the best idea, a divorce proceeding over a weekend might mirror that in terms of neglect. Unless you're remaining friends and have all the financials agreed upon, the particulars of a divorce can take a while to settle upon—and we're not even including couples with children. It might not be the best idea to rush through a divorce in a long weekend because as we've mentioned before, a finalized divorce is just that—final. There are no take-backs. A bad divorce judgment will be there long after you've burned away the calories from the mint on your pillow.
