Life is hard when you're the Pregnant Man Thomas Beatie. Five years ago, Beatie gained worldwide acclaim for becoming the first "man" to give birth. However, it's not quite the miracle that statement would have you believe --- "he" was formerly a woman who took testosterone therapy, underwent a double-mastectomy, but retained female reproductive organs and gave birth to three children. However in Arizona, where Thomas settled down with his wife Nancy after getting married in Hawaii, not even going through all that is enough to get your marriage recognized enough to be granted a divorce.
According to state judges, the nine-year marriage that was granted in the Aloha State isn't legal in Arizona because the state doesn't recognize same-sex marriages. So therefore, Thomas can just leave Nancy with no repercussions in Arizona, something that he doesn't feel is right. According to his lawyers, Beattie was "saddened" by the decision, and feels it's his duty to make it right. He wants to fight for transgender people and his own life if he decides he wants to get married later on. That's why he's going to appeal the decision and take it as far as it can go for him to claim what he believes are his rights.
"This obviously is not Beatie versus Beatie," Thomas Beatie said as he spoke to reporters at his attorney's office. "This is the state of Arizona versus transgender people, human reproductive rights and fairness under law."
