NC State Senator Allran Pushes Two-Year Divorce Waiting Period

Posted By Demetria Graves || 1-Apr-2013

Some people can't wait to get married. Before they say their "I do's," they've already mapped out where they're going to put their child's playroom or retire to together. Alternately, some people can't wait to get divorced. Before they've signed the divorce papers, they've already thought about hitting the singles bars. If you live in North Carolina, however, this get-split-quick dream may take a bit longer if a state senator has his way.

State Sen. Austin Allran, who a republican who represents North Carolina's forty-second district, put forth the The Healthy Marriage Act, which adds another year to the already one-year probation period that North Carolinians must wait before a divorce is granted. During those two years, the couple will need to complete courses on improving communications skills and conflict resolution. The situation gets even direr if they have children. If that's the case, they need to take at least a four-hour class on the impact of divorce on children.

Of interest to those with a fiery, passionate (and unpredictable) marriage is a provision in the bill that would eliminate a rule that states intercourse with your spouse would reset the two-year clock on the divorce timetable.

Do you think this helps promote marriage, or is it just a waste of time and taxpayer funds?
