'Real Housewives' Divorce Rate Doubles American Women's

Posted By Demetria Graves || 1-Apr-2013

To fit the proper definition of a housewife, a woman has to first be married. Don't tell that to the ladies of the "Real Housewives" franchise, however. After some number crunching, Buzzfeed's Anna North has uncovered the truth that we knew in theory, but didn't have the numbers to back up — that Bravo's ladies of leisure get divorced to their mates in big numbers. How big? More than double of what the national average for women is.

According to the report, 22.4 percent of all American women divorce at some point in their life. When thrown into a calculator blender, the women across all RH franchises eclipse that by almost 30 percentage points, their number falling at 51.3 percent.

Of the six franchises, the Californian delegations came in first and second in terms of percentage of cast members who have been divorced at some time. The Beverly Hills troop figured at almost three-quarters of the show at 71.4 percent. The OC is a place for more than just soap-opera-y theatrics as two-thirds of their participants (66.4 percent, to be exact) are divorcees. The southeast and northeast spin-offs came in next, as Miami (57.1 percent) and New York (50 percent) firmly placed themselves in the middle with at least half their participants divorcing. Atlanta's entry only figured a third of their members divorcing, but no word if that included this week's Porsha Williams-Kordell Stewart falling out.

That leaves New Jersey's franchise as the most "normal" group of women — in terms of divorce, anyway. They came in at 20 percent divorced with Jacqueline being the only current cast member breaking her vows.
