Sometimes, the most interesting experiences come from unexpected things. Tom Cruise, out promoting his film Oblivion in Germany, has decided to break his silence over his year-old divorce from Katie Holmes. He could’ve opened up on the still-hot topic to anyone stateside—The Today Show, New York Times, LA Times. But the
Top Gun star decided to make his first public words about the ordeal to German TV network ProSieben.
"I didn't expect it," he confesses of the end of his five-year marriage to the star, with whom he shares daughter Suri, 6. After the split, he says, he "had an unbelievable amount of time to think about it" as he threw himself into his work. The takeaway from all that thinking?
"Life is a challenge."
We’re trying to figure out what makes this divorce from Holmes different from his previous two—to, in order, Mimi Rodgers and Nicole Kidman—that didn’t make the later divorces “a challenge”? It couldn’t have been the settlement amount that, at $400,000 per year strictly for Suri, hardly makes a dent in his estimated $250 million net worth.
"To be 50 and to have experiences and to think you have a grip on everything, and then it hits you— this is it, what life can do to you," he told ProSieben. "Life is a tragicomedy. You need to have a sense of humor."
Or at least an ironclad lawyer.
