"Divorce Monday" is Real

Posted By Demetria Graves || 6-Jan-2014

Did your marriage survive Jan. 6? Count yourself lucky because thousands of other couples didn’t. That’s because the date is known as “Divorce Monday,” the day divorce lawyers know their phones will be ringing off the hook.

There are a few reasons why spouses decide to call it quits on this day more than any other. In a survey of 1,000 by the website DivorceDepot, people found the biggest marital strains were finances, which affected one in three people, followed by excess alcohol, in-laws and rows over cooking and gift buying. But for 12 percent, just spending extra time with their partner caused the cracks to show.

There are also specific reasons why Jan. 6 is such a popular date to get divorced. First, the bills that people incur over the holidays begin to come in. Second, people have to go back to work of the holiday break. Third is that the mark of the end of the holiday break is a day to put into action the bad feelings some have built up over the holidays while thinking about the relationship.

Ruth Sutherland, chief executive of relationship support service Relate, said: “New Year is a time when many of us naturally assess how life is going and this can make people think about relationships.”

If talk of divorce isn’t bad enough, today is also set to be the most depressing day of the year.
