Think back to your wedding. Most of you will remember the great times,
but also the stress of having to pay for it. For every scenario like the
film Father of the Bride, where the bride’s father would pay for
the whole wedding, there are hundreds more where the couple have to scrounge
to make the day work. Well, there’s a new startup that will give
you $10,000 for your wedding — but if you divorce you have to pay
it back, and then some.
Swanluv — named after the animal that mates for life — is
actually betting that newlyweds won’t be in it for the long haul.
How much you have to pay back is the variable in play — company
co-founder Scott Avy won’t reveal the couple-selection criteria
or the interest range. He said simply that the number “won’t
be too crazy.”
Some may say that the company is benefiting from heartache — and
you’d be both right and wrong. The interest paid back to the company
won’t go back into their coffers, but to the next couples asking
for help with their wedding. So how does Swanluv believe it will make
money — by selling ad space on their site. Also, the contracts include
a clause that charges only one partner if abuse ends a marriage.
