Last newsletter, we wrote about bombshell actress Sophia Vergara's bombshell divorce proceedings where, at stake, were the fates of two embryos the couple froze before her separation from businessman Nick Loeb last May. While Vergara wants to keep the fertilized embryos put on ice indefinitely, the very pro-life Loeb went on record at The Paper of Record, the New York Times, to explain why he wants them untouched.
Loeb's argument here is that both couples should have say in a situation like this, specifically the situation he found himself in. The couple froze those embryos to have them implanted into a surrogate. Unfortunately, before that could happen, the couple split. According to her lawyer, Vergara wants to keep the embryos frozen indefinitely, which is something Loeb definitely doesn't want to do.
Here are three of the more interesting of Loeb's posits
- When we create embryos for the purpose of life, should we not define them as life, rather than as property? Does one person's desire to avoid biological parenthood (free of any legal obligations) outweigh another's religious beliefs in the sanctity of life and desire to be a parent?
- Many have asked me: Why not just move on and have a family of your own? I have every intention of doing so. But that doesn't mean I should let the two lives I have already created be destroyed or sit in a freezer until the end of time.
- "In my view, keeping them frozen forever is tantamount to killing them." [In response to Vergara's wish to keep the embryos frozen forever]
