Tips on Surviving Work During Divorce

Posted By The Graves Law Firm || 14-Jun-2016

When you’re trudging through the process of a divorce, getting out of bed and going to work can seem like a daunting task. Most people experience intense feelings of sadness, depression, loneliness and fear which can be debilitating. These feelings can affect your ability to focus and have the energy you need to do your job. The key to surviving your workday while going through a divorce is to have a plan. Thankfully, our Pasadena divorce attorney has shared a few tips for men and women working through their divorce continue reading from more information.

Clear Your Desk, Clear Your Mind

When the tendrils of depression begin to pull at you, your workspace can become cluttered and chaotic, much like your headspace. If you have feelings of anxiety or sadness, it is important you have a space that is organized and peaceful in order for you to work productively. Is your desk decorated with family snaps shots of you and your ex on vacation? Are there family portraits from past holidays hung on your walls? If so, take these down. These photos could set off emotions that could interfere with your ability to work. Take an afternoon to redecorate your workplace, make it an atmosphere of tranquility.

Prepare a Statement

Your coworkers are likely to notice something is wrong. In order to prevent yourself from sharing too much, prepare what you are going to say when your coworkers ask you what is wrong. You could say something like:

  • “Thank you for your concern, I’ll be alright. I’m just going through some personal issues right now.”
  • “I’m just going through something personal. I appreciate your concern, but I’ll be fine.”

Acknowledge your appreciation for their concern, but let them know you are not interested in sharing more information.

Block Incoming Divorce Messages

Only read divorce related messages from your lawyer after business hours. Opening emails with information regarding your case could potentially ruin your day. Consider creating a separate folder to filter your Pasadena divorce lawyer’s email into so you won’t be tempted to open them at work based on the subject and preview line.

Keep Busy

For many people, keeping busy during a time of great emotional turmoil can help them keep their mind from focusing on the thing bothering them and continue the tasks they need to accomplish. While we certainly do not recommend you always keep busy (you need to give yourself time to process the divorce), keeping busy at work to get you through the day is recommended. Take on more tasks or consider training in a new area to keep your mind off the divorce.

Put Your Cell Phone Away

During business hours, try to put your cell phone in a drawer or turn it on silent to avoid texts from friends, family, and your spouse. While many of your friends and family may be sending concerned messages, texting about your divorce during the workday could trigger emotions that may make it difficult for you to concentrate on your work. Some cell phones have “Do Not Disturb” modes which prevent your phone from even vibrating or indicating a text message was received. Perhaps setting your phone to this mode during business hours could help keep your friends and family from disrupting your day.

Find Quick Mood Boosters

Explore different options that could help you get a quick mood boost when you need it. For example, YouTube and Facebook have a multitude of cute animal videos that could bring a smile to anyone’s face. If that isn’t an option, make a playlist of music that you know will cheer you up.

Take Breaks

If you are feeling stressed, walk away from your desk and get some fresh air for 10 minutes. Grab a cup of coffee at the local café or head to your car for a few minutes to shut your eyes. Find a place where you can de-stress and where you feel safe.
