5 Things to Consider Before Your Divorce

5 Things to Consider Before Your Divorce

When a marriage ends, whatever the reason for the split, it is never easy for either party. At The Graves Law Firm, we are deeply invested in providing you and your family with compassionate, easy to understand options for your separation or divorce. After many years helping families navigate through the divorce process, we have developed a list of 5 things to consider prior to finalizing your divorce.

1.How will this affect your children?

If processing your divorce is difficult and stressful for you, imagine the confusion and emotional stress your minor children might be feeling. If you have young children at home, we recommend you and your spouse discuss how you plan to manage your children’s lives. Is it possible for them to remain in the same school? What about staying in the same house? It may be difficult for you and your partner to get along, but providing your children with some stability during this time of flux is extremely important.

2.Contact a Pasadena Family Law Attorney

If you and your spouse are considering divorce or legal separation, you should consider consulting a qualified family law attorney. Contacting an attorney can help you establish a road map for yourself and your family.

3.Develop a plan

After you have consulted a family law attorney, you and your spouse may want to consider developing a clear plan on how you plan split custody, raise the children, and split property. Discussing possible long term and short term plans for after the divorce allows for a more efficient process.

4.Financial Considerations

While discussing your options with your family law attorney, consider the financial impact the divorce will have on both parties involved.

  • Dividing Assets – whether you own multiple properties together, or a small home with family heirlooms, you and your spouse should discuss who will get what after the divorce.
  • Your Credit Score – Before your divorce is final, pull your credit report to determine if they are any blemishes that could possibly hinder your ability to borrow money individually.
  • Bank Accounts—If you have a joint bank account you may want to consider opening up your own individual account.
  • Insurance Coverage—Some spouses receive medical benefits because of their marital status. If your spouse is living with an ongoing medical condition, you may want to review their coverage options available once you are no longer married.
  • You decide Your Next Steps

During this stressful time of your life, you may want to seek the advice or support of your friends and family, which is completely normal. However, remember that you and your spouse should be the only people involved in making your decision. Our attorneys can help advise you on your options but the decision is yours to make.
