In the state of California, there are essentially two grounds on which
one can file for divorce. The first is irreconcilable differences, the
most common reason for divorce. This encompasses things like cheating,
lack of communication, and financial issues. The second ground for divorce
is incurable insanity, which must be proven true by a doctor—you
can’t just allege that your spouse is crazy!
You can also file for an annulment in California, which voids the marriage
as though it never happened.
The courts here are very, very strict about allowing annulments, and there are only a few grounds they’ll consider, including incest,
bigamy, forced marriages, or if one of the spouses is underage.
